Lunchtime Concert Series: Going Off Script: The Ornamented Suites for Cello
Admission is FREE
Juliana Soltis, Baroque cello
The Bach you know is only the beginning. Join cellist Juliana Soltis as she breaks with 200 years of tradition to explore the long-lost practice of spontaneous improvisation in J.S. Bach's beloved Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello.
Performed entirely on historical instruments, including the rarely-heard 5-string violoncello piccolo, these are the Bach cello suites as they have not been played in centuries – and a musical experience you won't want to miss.
PROGRAM (Selections From)
Johann Sebastian Bach - Suite No. 6 in D Major, BWV 1012
Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007
Equal parts performer, scholar, and musical provocateur, cellist Juliana Soltis delights in connecting audiences with the forgotten stories of classical music. Hailed as "a clear virtuoso" (Classical Music) and praised for her "heart-rending" interpretations (Early Music America), Juliana specializes in the historical performance of the Baroque and Classical Cellos, violoncello piccolo, and viola da gamba.
A featured performer at numerous festivals and on various concert series, Ms. Soltis has appeared at the Boston Early Music Festival, the BRQ Vantaa Festival (Finland), Gotham Early Music Society's Midtown Concerts (New York), and the Millennium Stage Series at the Kennedy Center (Washington, DC).
Lauded for her "thought-provoking" approach to historical music (The Oberlin Review), in 2017 Juliana released her debut album, Entrez, le Diable!, a critically-acclaimed chronicle of the meteoric (and controversial) rise of the cello as a solo instrument in 18-century France. In September 2019, she will release her eagerly-anticipated follow-up album, Going Off Script: The Ornamented Suites for Cello, an exploration of the long-lost tradition of spontaneous improvisation in J.S. Bach's beloved Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello.
An active concert artist who maintains a busy touring schedule both at home and abroad, Juliana will spend the 2019-2020 season traveling the U.S. as part of the Going Off Script Album Tour. When she is not on the road, she enjoys long-distance running, hunting for vintage recordings, and binge-watching tv shows with her rescue greyhound, Rain.
