J.S. Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin are quintessential repertoire for any violinist and music lover. In 1923, Eugene Ysaye was inspired to write his own set of six solo violin works after hearing a recital of Bach's sonata in G Minor. Ysaye's Sonata no. 2 pays tribute to Bach through direct quotes of the Preludio of the Partita in E major. Paul Hindemith's Op. 11, No. 6 is a lesser known jewel, written at the end of WWI and published close to the end of the 20th century.
